Zika Virus Infection in Cook Islands

13 March 2014

The media has reported that Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has been confirmed in the Cook Islands for the first time.

Around 175 suspected cases have been identified. Initially, dengue fever was suspected as both infections have similar symptoms, however, ZIKV has been confirmed in 18 laboratory samples. Laboratory results are awaited for a further 40 suspected cases. Health officials report that ZIKV has been imported by a traveller returning from an infected area. The majority of those with symptoms are on Rarotonga (165), with the remainder on Aitutaki (10).
