A Syrian child currently residing in Lebanon as a refugee has been isolated in hospital in Taanaye, 45km from Beirut. The child has symptoms clinically suggestive of poliomyelitis and WHO officials have dispatched throat and stool samples to Cairo for laboratory confirmation/exclusion. Meningitis has been excluded as a diagnosis.
Polio boosters are not recommended for Lebanon. The current situation will be monitored and updated accordingly if necessary.
