Poliomyelitis in Cameroon (Update)

A new case of poliomyelitis has been reported in Cameroon (onset of paralysis 31 January 2014). The three new cases reported in January 2014, were identified in new areas of the country indicating ongoing and widening transmission of wild poliovirus (type 1) in Cameroon.

The areas now reporting cases include: West, North West, Centre and Adamaoua Regions. The risk of international spread of poliomyelitis from Cameroon has been increased by WHO to 'very high'.

Advice for Travellers

It is recommended that travellers have a poliomyelitis booster (or course) if not already protected and take precautions with food, water and personal hygiene.
