During the week beginning 24 February 2014, a total of 601 suspected cases of measles were reported nationally in Ethiopia. The worst affected region is Amhara with 446 suspected cases. The remaining cases were reported in Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Regions (67) Oromia (56) and Tigray (6) regions, and Addis Ababa (16) and Harar (6).
A mass measles vaccination campaign is underway and widening the target population is being considered.
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
