An outbreak of cholera has been ongoing in the city of Pointe-Noire, autonomous department on the coast of the Republic of Congo. The outbreak began following heavy rains in November 2012, official figures stand at 1054 cases and 16 deaths as a result of cholera thus far.
Health officials have produced a report recommending a new reinforced plan to respond to the outbreak. Pointe-Noire city has poor sanitation and unsafe water supply.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
