Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever in Liberia (Confirmed)

01 April 2014

The Ministry of Health of Liberia has reported that Ebola haemorrhagic fever (EHF) has now been laboratory confirmed. Clinical samples from seven suspected cases in Foya district, Lofa County, were submitted for confirmation and two have tested positive for ebolavirus.

Two deaths have been reported among the suspected cases; a 35 year-old woman who died on 21 March tested positive for ebolavirus and a man who died on 27 March tested negative. At present the outbreak has been confined to Foya district with 27 contacts under medical follow-up.

The Liberian government has set up a National Task Force to lead the response. Response partners include WHO, the International Red Cross and several other local charitable organisations.

Advice for Travellers

The risk of travellers becoming infected or developing Ebola haemorrhagic fever is extremely low, unless there has been direct contact with blood or bodily fluids of dead or living infected persons or animals. Healthcare workers are at particular risk, although practising appropriate infection control should effectively prevent transmission of disease in this setting.

Travellers returning from tropical countries should always seek rapid medical attention if they develop flu-like symptoms (such as fever, headache, diarrhoea or general malaise) within three weeks after return, and be reminded to mention to their health care provider that they have recently travelled.
