A male traveller returning from Mali has died in Paris from rabies virus infection. The media report gives no information on the possible source of rabies virus transmission. All contacts of the man are being assessed for the need of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis.
In 2011, 28 human deaths from rabies virus infection were reported in Mali, this fell to 2 deaths in 2012, with no human deaths were reported in 2013.
Mali is considered by WHO as a 'high risk' country for rabies in terrestrial animals. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is available for those considered to be risk. Travellers to Mali should avoid all animal contact and report any bites as soon as possible for medical assessment.
