Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome in Russia

10 April 2014

The Ministry of Health for the Republic of Udmurtia, Volga Federal District in the west of Russia has reported an early seasonal increase in the number of cases of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). During the first two months of 2014, 67 cases were reported; this compares with 20 cases for the same time period of 2013.

HFRS is endemic in Udmurtia and the area is one of the worst affected worldwide. Health officials relate the spike in cases to an increase in the vector of the infection (the red-backed vole) due to the mild winter and abundant food supply.

Advice for Travellers

Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome is a result of hantavirus infection transmitted by the excreta of infected rodents.

The risk to most travellers is low. Risk is increased in campers, agricultural workers, and building workers. When camping in areas of potential risk keep food covered, clean food preparation surfaces just prior to use and avoid dust inhalation.
