An outbreak of cholera has been confirmed in the village of Gaidatar, Rautahat district, Central Region. Villagers began reporting symptoms around four weeks ago and stool samples taken three weeks ago were confirmed as cholera on 14 May 2014. More than 400 villagers have reported gastrointestinal symptoms in recent weeks.
The last cholera outbreak in this village was five years ago when more than 100 cases were recorded. The source of the outbreak is thought to be contaminated drinking water and government officials report that the outbreak is coming under control.
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
