A cholera outbreak has been reported from the town of Alamada, Cotabato province in North Cotabato. Cholera was confirmed on 16 May 2014, following results of sample testing. A total of 769 suspected cases sought medical attention for gastrointestinal symptoms, of those, 438 had samples testing positive for cholera.
The Department of Health declared a state of calamity on 14 May 2014, and is taking steps to control the outbreak.
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
