From 1 Jan 2013 to 9 Jun 2013, a total of 16 suspected cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), including 6 deaths were reported from Pakistan. So far, 7 of these reported cases have been laboratory-confirmed. In 2012, the country faced a similar outbreak of CCHF with 61 suspected cases, including 17 deaths reported from the disease. The majority of the cases were reported from the provinces of Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.
Advice for Travellers
There is no safe and effective vaccine available for use in humans. Avoidance of tick bites is the main preventive measure, especially during summer months when they are most active - usually Mar to Oct in the Middle East, Europe and Asia.
