Mumps in the United States (Update)

19 May 2014

The mumps outbreak in central Ohio state is ongoing. The Public Health Department has reported a total of 361 cases in Franklin, Delaware and Madison Counties. Of those cases, 208 are connected with the Ohio State University, where the outbreak began. The age range of cases is from 4 months to 80 years-of-age.

The Health Department is encouraging everyone to ensure that they have received two doses of MMR vaccination.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
