Chikenpox (Varicella) in India

City hospitals reported as many as 450 cases of chickenpox in Ranchi in the past month. Around 30 individuals had been treated at the Rims in April (2014) while the Sadar hospital attended to 50. The city of Ranchi is the capital of Jharkhand state in eastern India.

Advice for Travellers

In the UK, chickenpox is a common childhood ailment and most adults have immunity due to natural infection. In childhood the illness is faily mild but can be more serious in adults, pregnant women and those with immune disorders due to disease or treatment. Varicella vaccine is not included in the childhood immunisation programme in the UK.
