Avian Influenza (Human) in Indonesia

Indonesia has reported the first human case of avian influenza infection (H5N1) in 2014. The case was a 2-year-old boy from Central Java, Jawa Tengah province who died from the infection on 20 April 2014. Sick poultry had died around the house in the weeks before the child became unwell.

Since 2003, Indonesia has reported 195 human cases of H5N1 infection, including 163 deaths; only 3 confirmed cases were reported in 2013.

WHO reports that the global number of laboratory-confirmed human cases of H5N1 infection since 2003, is 665, 392 of which have been fatal.
