Typhoid Fever (Suspected) in Syria

The ongoing conflict in Syria is causing damage to water supply and sanitation systems resulting in an increased risk of water and food-borne diseases. The Euphrates River, which is a primary source of drinking water for the northern and eastern governorates in Syria is reported to be polluted.

In Deir ez-Zor, health workers have reported increasing cases of suspected typhoid; over 1650 cases have been recorded in Deir ez-Zor governorate, mainly in Al-Bukamal and Al-Mayadin towns.

Advice for Travellers

Typhoid vaccine is available for those travelling to Syria. Access to safe water is essential and a high standard of personal hygiene and food safety should be maintained.
