Chikungunya Virus Infection in Turks and Caicos Islands

09 July 2014

The Director of Health Services for Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) has confirmed that cases of chikungunya virus infection have been increasing on the islands. A total of 17 cases have been reported, although this media report does not specify how many of those are imported cases or locally acquired infections. Major outbreaks of chikungunya virus infection are ongoing in Haiti and Domincan Republic which are neighbours of TCI.

Residents have been made aware of the outbreak and have been urged to continue to take precautions to protect themselves against mosquito bites and take steps to reduce the number of mosquito breeding sites around their homes.

Chikungunya first affected the Caribbean when it was identified in Saint Martin in December 2013. It has since spread to 18 other countries and territories in the region.
