Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever in Russian Federation

The Russian Public Health Surveillance Center has reported five cases of Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) in Volograd. Three cases were reported in Kotelnikovskiy district, one in Oktyabrskiy district and one in Chernishevskiy district. One of the five cases died as a result.

As of 24 June 2013, there have been 55 cases of CCHF reported in the Southern Federal Region.

The Epidemiology Organization for Stavropol region continues to report cases of CCHF. A total of 21 cases have been recorded in 9 districts: Apanasenkovskij, Arzgirskogo, Budennovsky, Ipatovsky, Krasnogvardeysky, Novoselytsya, Trunovskogo, Turkmen and Shpakovsky. CCHF virus was found in ticks sampled in 8 districts, indicating that the virus is still widespread in the region.

Stavropol is in the North Caucasian Federal District.

Advice for Travellers

CCHF is a low risk for the average traveller; it is spread by infected ticks from a reservoir usually in animals such as cattle, sheep and goats. Avoidance of tick bites is essential in risk areas.
