An outbreak of hepatitis E has been reported from the Lakes state of South Sudan. Cases of hepatitis E have increased over the last three months with 55 cases reported in June alone. In April 2014, only two cases were reported.
The outbreak has mainly affected those living in a camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), however, cases are now also being reported in the local community.

There is no vaccine available to protect against hepatitis E. The infection is transmitted by the faecal/oral route, i.e via contaminated food and water.
Prevention is by maintaining a good standard of food, water and personal hygiene.
