An outbreak of cholera has been reported from the health area of Allada-Ze-Toffo in the south of Benin. Around 150 cases and 7 cholera related deaths have been registered. The outbreak has quickly taken hold and health officials put this down to those affected in the early days not reporting the illness. Measures have now been put in place to try and contain the outbreak.
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
