The health authorities of Hong Kong have reported a second confirmed case of Japanese encephalitis virus infection in 2014. Both cases were located in Yuen Long district which is an area with many large bodies of water e.g. ponds and marshes which may act as mosquito breeding sites. One of the cases lived close to four pig farms. Neither of the cases gave a history of travel. Further cases are predicted as more rainfall is expected.
Six cases of JE were reported in Hong Kong in 2013. Of those, 2 were locally acquired and 3 were imported; the source of infection was unidentifed for the sixth case.
Japanese encephalitis is a low risk for travellers to Hong Kong as most visits are short and city based. Vaccine is available for those staying in risk areas for an extended period. Bite avoidance measures are recommended.
