Cholera in Haiti (Update)

24 July 2014

A cholera immunisation campaign is to be implememted in parts of Haiti, beginning in August 2014. The Ministry of Health will be supported by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and others, as 200 000 individuals in three departments of the country are targeted for immunisation.

The Ministry of Health has selected the areas most at risk to be included in the campaign: the Artibonite (Gonaives and Ennery), Central (Lascahobas, Saut d'Eau, Savanette and Mirebalais), and West (Arcahaie) departments.

The long-term objective is to eliminate cholera in Haiti, both by immunisation and sustained improvements in access to water and sanitation for the population.

The cholera situation has improved with 6730 cases and 51 deaths reported between January and 6 July 2014. This compares with 26 000 cases for the same time period of 2013.

Since the epidemic began in 2010, more than 703 000 cholera cases and 8562 related deaths have been recorded.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
