Chikunguya Virus Infection in the United States

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States (US) has reported that a total of 284 cases of chikungunya virus infection has been recorded among 35 states of the country. The majority of cases have been imported from the Caribbean and South America where an outbreak has been ongoing since December 2013.

Locally-transmitted cases have been reported in Florida and the US territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The total number of cases of chikungunya virus infection in the US, including the territories is 497; an annual average of 28 cases are reported in the US.

Florida and New York have reported the most cases, followed by Tennessee, New Jersey, Rhode Island, California and Connecticut.

Advice for Travellers

Although chikungunya virus is not endemic in the US, travellers should avoid mosquito bites routinely when in areas where they are prevalent e.g. the state of Florida.
