Cholera in Mexico (Update)

31 July 2014

The cholera outbreak in the municipality of Tlaxcoapan in Hidalgo state has now spread to two further municipalities. The health authorities have confirmed two new cases (from the same family) in the municipality of Mixquiahuala. A total of 11 cholera cases have been recorded.

Advice for Travellers

Hidalgo state, located in east mexico is not one of the popular tourist destinations for UK travellers, therefore the cholera risk for most travellers is very low.

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
