Veterinarians for Animal Welfare in Zimbabwe are concerned at the increasing number of rabies cases throughout the country.
Recently a dog from Arcturus, Mashonaland East Province outside the capital of Harare and a feral cat from Avondale, a suburb of Harare tested positive for rabies. There have also been unconfirmed reports of a mild rabies outbreak in rural Shurugwi.
A young boy from Chegutu, Mashonaland West Province, died from rabies after being bitten by a neighbour's dog.
The public are being encouraged to have their pets vaccinated against rabies annually and seek medical advice immediately if coming into contact with an unknown animal, particularly one displaying unusual behaviour; children should be warned not to interact with strange animals.
Zimbabwe is considered by WHO to be a high risk destination for rabies virus in terrestrial animals. Travellers at risk are recommended to have rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis. All travellers should avoid animal contact and report any bites immediately for medical assessment.
