04 August 2014

The health department of the state of Tennessee has reported an increased incidence of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) in 2014. As of 31 July 2014, a total of 328 cases have been reported. In 2013, 244 cases of RMSF were recorded during the same time period in Tennessee.

The states of North Carolina, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee and Missouri account for more than 60% of RMSF cases in the United States.

Advice for Travellers

RMSF is transmitted by the bite of an infected American dog tick. Travellers to risk areas should be made aware and be advised to take steps to avoid tick bites.
