An outbreak of cholera has been reported from the town of Rumonge in the province of Bururi, 70 km south of the capital Bujumbura. In less than two week 86 individuals sought medical treatment at the local hospital for cholera symptoms. The affected areas of the town include: Iteba, Nkayamba, Ihwanya, Kagongo, Nyakarara and Swahili.
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
