The Samoa Ministry of Health has reported eight confirmed cases of chikungunya virus infection. This follows laboratory results for 20 specimens from suspected cases that were sent overseas for testing.
As of 11 August 2014, 96 new suspected cases of chikungunya virus were reported; blood samples have been sent for confirmation.
A cleanup campaign to reduce mosquito breeding sites is being planned for areas around Faleata and Vaimauga districts where most of the cases in the Apia urban area were reported.
This media report does not state if the cases were locally acquired or imported.
