Meningococcal Meningitis in Ethiopia

18 August 2014

Reports of meningococcal meningitis cases are increasing in the following regions of Ethiopia: Amhara, Gambella, Oromia, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples (SNNP) and Tigray.

During the first week of August, 26 cases were reported from Amhara and SNNP. Due to the early increase in meningitis cases, 200 000 doses of meningitis vaccine have been procured by WHO in advance of the meningitis epidemic season in the meningitis belt of Africa.

Advice for Travellers

Vaccination is dependant on an individual risk assessment but should be considered for travel to a region with a current outbreak/ongoing epidemic where close, prolonged contact with the local population is anticipated, particularly in overcrowded areas and during the high risk season.
