Measles in Ethiopia

18 August 2014

During the first week of August 2014, 160 measles cases were reported nationally in Ethiopia. Of those cases, 50% were located in Amhara and Oromia regions. Thus far in 2014, the government has dealt with 202 outbreaks of measles throughout 189 administrative sub-divisions. The worst affected areas were, Amhara (61 outbreaks) and Oromia (75) regions. Sixty nine per cent of confirmed cases were children under 15 years-of-age.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
