West Nile virus (WNV) disease activity is reported fromthe state of California, with an outbreak in Orange County involving 94 cases and 3 fatalities. Sixty-three cases, including those who died, developed neuroinvasive disease

The California Department of Public Health reports a total of 238 human cases
of WNV and 9 fatalities across 26 counties in the year to date (10 September 2014).
There is no vaccine or specific treatment for WNV. Infection is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito, therefore avoidance of mosquito bites is essential, by 'covering up' and the use of bite avoidance measures.
