Chikungunya Virus Infection in Guyana (Update)

Chikungunya virus continues to circulate in Guyana and a recent increase is cases has lead to further steps to control the outbreak. To date, around 1000 cases have been reported and some health facilities have received as many as 60 new cases per day recently.

The health ministry is spraying the capital of Georgetown and other populated areas and has urged the community to continue to destroy mosquito breeding grounds.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
