Measles in Papu New Guinea (Update)

16 September 2014

A measles outbreak in Papua New Guinea is ongoing.

The health authorities in Madang Province are raising awareness and urge the community to seek medical attention immediately if they suspect that they might have the infection. At least 10 children in the area have died from measles and more than 1700 confirmed cases have been reported.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
