The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has reported extremely high levels of sulphur dioxide around Bárðarbunga volcano on the Vatnajökull glacier in the east of Iceland. Icelandic authorities have described the sulphur dioxide levels as potentially life threatening and have closed the affected areas to the public until further notice.
Travellers with existing respiratory conditions should take particular care. All travellers are advised to monitor for updates on the Icelandic Met Office and Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration websites, and follow the advice of local authorities.
