Leishmaniasis in South Sudan

The United Nations has revealed that the number of leishmaniasis cases in South Sudan has risen to 4624 in the last 9 months. The United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in the weekly situation update that 260 new cases have been recorded since September 2014, bringing the 2014 total to 4624; up from 1614 cumulative cases up to the same week in 2013. OCHA said most of the cases were in Chuil, Lankien, and Malakal districts.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers should take steps to avoid sandfly bites by the use of repellents, clothing, nets etc. Sandflies fly low and bite mainly from dusk to dawn; particular care should be taken to protect ankles and legs when out of doors in the evening.
