Cases of chikungunya virus infection have been reported from the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia. Fifteen cases have been confirmed thus far, with most being located in the municipality of Teva I Uta.
Investigation of the outbreak is underway to determine the source and extent of transmission. Mosquito control measures will be implemented, when the rainy season begins.
Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
