Measles in Solomon Islands (Update)

27 October 2014

The measles outbreak in the Solomon Islands is not yet over. As of 20 October 2014, a total of 3802 cases have been recorded. A total of 7 measles related deaths have been recorded; the latest being a 6-month-old baby from Western province.

Measles cases are being reported from all 10 provinces with increasing suspected cases in Western, Malaita and Renbel provinces. The national immunisation campaign is continuing to target all (excluding pregnant women) between the age of 6 months and 30 years.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
