The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control has reported a new case of Japanese encephalitis (JE) in the country. The case is an 80-year-old female from southern Taiwan who gives no history of recent travel to an edemic area.
A total of 17 confirmed cases of JE have been recorded in Taiwan in 2014: 4 in Changhua County, 3 in Pingtung County, 3 in Tainan City, 2 in Chiayi City, 2 in Kaohsiung City, 1 in Hsinchu County, 1 in Taichung City, and 1 in Yilan County.

Japanese ecephalitis vaccine is recommended for certain travellers considered to be at risk; particularly during the high risk season. Travellers should aslo take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
