Japanese Encephalitis in India

23 July 2013

The district health department of Assam state in northeast India has increased surveillance following the report of Japanese encephalitis (JE) cases in Kokrajhar. An awareness campaign has also been implemented as pigs, the reservoir of infection, are reared in most of the tribal households.

The most recent case is an 11 year-old girl from the Gassaigaon area where another case of JE was reported. In June 2013, two other cases of JE were reported in the district.

Health officials report that JE has been increasing in the district over the years and villagers should urgently take steps to limit risk. In 2012, 13 individuals were diagnosed with acute encephalitis syndrome (AES). Of the 13 cases, 7 were found to be positive for JE virus. June and July are peak months for the transmission of JE in the area.

Advice for Travellers

Japanese encephalitis vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk. Travellers should take steps to avoid mosquito bites, particularly during peak transmission during June and July.
