Japanese Encephalitis in Hong Kong

23 July 2013

The Department of Health for Hong Kong has reported two locally acquired cases of Japanese encephalitis in July 2013. The cases occurred in Yuen Long District in the northwestern New Territories; a rural farming area rarely visited by travellers. One local case was reported in 2012, in the same geographic area.

Advice for Travellers

Japanese encephalitis is a very low risk for most travellers to Hong Kong and vaccination is not recommended. Avoidance of mosquito bites is recommended as dengue fever is a risk.
