Cholera in Burundi

25 July 2013

The cholera epidemic in Burundi that began in October 2012, is ongoing. To date, 936 cases and 17 associated deaths have been recorded during the longest cholera outbreak that Burundi has experienced.

The outbreak began in the northern districts of the capital Bujumbura, along Lake Tanganyika and north-western provinces before spreading across the entire country. Southern regions of the country are now also affected by the outbreak. Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world and access to safe drining water is a major problem.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
