Cholera continues to be reported from the Dominican Republic. Between 1 January-11 October 2014, 209 suspected cases and 5 related deaths were recorded; a monthly average of 23 cases. This compares with a monthly average of 130 cases during 2013, and 557 during 2012. The decreasing trend in new cases continues nationwide.
Since the epidemic began in November 2010, a total of 31 681 suspected cases and 472 cholera related deaths have been recorded.
Cholera is considered a low risk for travellers who have access to safe drinking water and who maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and food safety.
Cholera vaccine is available for those mixing closely with the local population who cannot ensure safe water/food and a good standard of personal hygiene.
