Cholera in Haiti (Update)

Cholera cases continue to be reported from Haiti. Although the number of new cases in 2014, is much lower than previous years, there has been an upward trend since the week ending 13 Sep 2014. Between 1 Jan-13 Sep 2014, the weekly average number of new cases was 250-290. From 14 Sep-1 Nov 2014, the weekly average has risen to 629.

Since the cholera outbreak began in Oct 2010, a total of 711 442 cases and 8646 cholera related deaths have been reported.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is considered a low risk for travellers who have access to safe drinking water and who maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and food safety.

Cholera vaccine is available for those mixing closely with the local population who cannot ensure safe water/food and a good standard of personal hygiene.
