Chikungunya Virus Infection in Nicaragua

13 November 2014

An ongoing outbreak of chikungunya virus infection has been reported from Nicaragua. Forty six cases were diagnosed recently making a total of 582 cases, thus far in the outbreak. Of the recently diagnosed cases, 43 were identified in the department of Managua, with the remaining 3 in Masaya; all are in a stable condition.

The authorities continue to take action with fumigation campaigns and by urging the local communities to support the reduction of mosquito breeding sites. It is hoped that the situation will improve following a change in weather conditions and a decline in rainfall over the next days.
