The Minister of Health for Sudan has launched a long term mass vaccination campaign against yellow fever. The campaign will be delivered in stages and aims to cover the whole country over time. The campaign will launch in South, North, East and Central Darfur states and in the White Nile, South and North Kordofan.
The number of yellow fever cases has increased over the past two decades due to declining population immunity to infection, deforestation, urbanization, population movements and climate change. Since 2012, 849 cases of yellow fever, including 171 deaths, have been reported in the Greater Darfur region.
The first shipment of 670 400 doses of yellow fever vaccine is scheduled to arrive in Sudan on 14 January 2014, followed by a 2nd and 3rd shipment of 702 000 doses and 827 600 doses respectively, shortly thereafter.

There is a risk of yellow fever in areas south of the Sahara Desert and vaccination is advised for travellers to these parts (unless contraindicated). There is no risk in the city of Khartoum.
In addition, vaccination might be required for certificate purposes.
