The departments of Artibonite, Centre, Ouest and Nord, account for 90% of cases reported in 2014. Ouest is the worst affected department with 36% of the total number of cases.
Since the cholera epidemic began in October 2010, a total of 717 203 cholera cases and 8721 deaths have been recorded.
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
