Pertusssis in Australia

16 January 2015

The Victoria Department of Health reported a 43 percent increase in pertussis (whooping cough) cases in patients aged 10-14 last year (2014). There was also a 38 percent rise in babies aged under 6 months, increasing to 76 cases in 2014 from 55 in 2013.

Additionally, figures obtained from the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System showed 1383 cases in Queensland in 2014, a rate of 29.7 cases per 100 000 people. The numbers were less than half those recorded in 2013 and 1/5th of those seen in 2012. They are the lowest figures for whooping cough in Queensland since 2004.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of pertussis vaccine in accordance with the UK schedule. The JCVI recommends pertussis boosters for pregnant women, but not for other adults in the UK.
