An outbreak of cholera has been reported in Kiliba, South Kivu province in the central east of the country. Since 10 January 2015, 14 cases and one cholera related death have been recorded. The outbreak has been blamed on the breakdown of drinking water supplies in the city over the last two months.
The health authorities are to begin chlorination of water in the meantime to help contain the outbreak.
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
