An outbreak of typhoid fever has been reported by the Minister of Health for Fiji. The outbreak is occurring in Bua in the Northern Division of the island. More than 20 cases have been recorded since the beginning of January 2015, and the infection has been linked to a New Year's function in a village in the province.
Typhoid vaccine is available and is sometimes recommended for Fiji. Travellers considered to be at risk should receive vaccine and be advised to maintain a high standard of food and water precautions and personal hygiene.
