Cholera in Mozambique

02 February 2015

An outbreak of cholera has been confirmed in the province of Nampula in the north of the country. A total of 544 cases of severe diarrhoea have been reported and since December 2014, new cases have been attributed to cholera. The outbreak is causing concern in the provincial capital of Namula city and the town of Namialo in Meconta district. The worst affected areas of the city are: Napipini, Mautala, Matauanha and Carrupeia due to very poor sanitation.

Cholera treatment centres have been opened. The source of the outbreak is likely consumption of water from traditional, unprotected wells.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
