Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever in India

A fatal case of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) has been reported from Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh state in the north of India. The case is a 50-year-old female who died in hospital in New Delhi on 29 January 2015.

This is the 4th death from CCHF in the country recently, last month 2 deaths were reported in the state of Rajasthan and one in the state of Himachal Pradesh.

Advice for Travellers

CCHF is a low risk for the average traveller; it is spread by infected ticks from a reservoir usually in animals such as cattle, sheep and goats. Avoidance of tick bites is essential in risk areas.
